Alabama National Cemetery

WHEREAS, for 237 years, our nation’s liberty has been protected and preserved by the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America; and  

WHEREAS, more than one million Americans, including thousands of Alabamians, who stood on the front lines of freedom, made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of liberty’s blessings; and

WHEREAS, as a grateful nation, we remember America’s fallen by celebrating and commemorating their lives; and

WHEREAS, the Alabama National Cemetery Memorial Day Commemoration is a way to honor all Veterans, and it is a day to rededicate ourselves to Abraham Lincoln’s call “to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan;” and

WHEREAS, there are 420,000 veterans living in Alabama, and an estimated 10,500 of them die each year; and

WHEREAS, for the next 50 years, the Alabama National Cemetery will serve as the final resting place for the men and women who bravely defended our Nation’s freedom:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 27, 2013, as the Fifth Anniversary of the

Alabama National Cemetery

in the state of Alabama.
