MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Thursday sent a letter to the President requesting additional assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in response to the recent tornado outbreak in Alabama.

“This week’s storms have had significant effects across Alabama,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “From the tornado damage in the northern part of the state to the flooding in the south, the severe weather caused extensive damage to our citizens and our communities.”

Governor Bentley requests an expedited major disaster declaration for Alabama to provide Individual Assistance and Public Assistance for Alabama counties impacted by the severe weather.

If granted, Individual Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.  The counties included in the initial request for individual assistance includes Baldwin, Lee, Limestone and Jefferson. Additional counties may be added in the future.

If granted, Public Assistance (PA) provides supplemental federal disaster grant assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain private non-profit organizations. The PA Program also encourages protection of these damaged facilities from future events by providing assistance for hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process. If approved, all impacted counties will be eligible to apply for the disaster assistance.
