General Smith’s last assignment was on active duty as Deputy Commanding General for National Guard Affairs for the U.S. Army Materiel Command, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Prior to that assignment, General Smith served the Alabama National Guard as Deputy Adjutant General, Joint Force Headquarters; Chief of Staff, 167th Theater Support Command; Commander 111th Ordinance Group (EOD); and Deputy Commander 122 Support Group (Corps).

His military career began with his commissioning as a second lieutenant through the Army ROTC Program at Auburn University in 1973. He joined the Alabama Army National Guard in 1975 and has held every position an officer can hold in a Field Artillery battalion to include five years as battery commander and three years as Field Artillery battalion commander.

His military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver hourglass, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, National Guard Master Recruiter Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

General Smith earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from Auburn University and a Masters in Human Resource Management from Troy University.

He is married to the former Ann Renfro and has two children and seven grandchildren.
